I feel like I really want to say something in response to this and also to your "Pretentious Director" video on YouTube. Maybe you'll get annoyed because I'm not going to praise you or affirm everything you've said like the people above me. But I used to really enjoy the things you posted on YouTube, the things that you called "bullshit." I felt like they were real, and honest. Not that I don't get that feeling from HaberDashery, but I don't think that even you can pretend that HaberDashery is some deep and enlightening cartoon. The animation is REALLY cool, that's the main reason I watched it, but the plot is lacking. It doesn't have any of the funny everyday experiences you used to vlog about.

I like watching vloggers on YouTube because it's interesting to see what other people have to say, and the ways they choose to portray their thoughts. I don't think many people vlog or make youtube videos necessarily because they're trying to create fantastic art-- it's fun, and it's a way to connect with people that you would probably never know otherwise. I think 99.9% of the people who vlog on YouTube would sell out in an instant if given the opportunity-- let's face it, if you're on YouTube to begin with, you're probably a shameless attention whore. Why else would you make videos about yourself and post them in a place for all the world to see?

You may call your old videos "bullshit" but I don't think that's what they were. And most of the people who like you now only like you because of those videos in the first place. They may say now, "oh, those old videos, what crap, what you're doing now is sooo much better," but you know that last year they were just waiting for you to make a "dear table" or "email moment with Boh3m3" video.

I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm having trouble getting out exactly what I want to say. I guess anymore I'm getting sick of watching your cynical, whiny bullshit. And to be perfectly honest, I think you're becoming quite pretentious yourself, holding yourself on a pedestal high above every other user on YouTube. I don't know why I keep watching you, but I'll probably watch your next obnoxious, whiny, pretentious video. See you then.

I know it's frustrating and I think you know you're not the only one who's sad to see YouTube going in the direction that it is. The truly unfortunate thing is that for the most part, the people who are on the most viewed, most subscribed, most discussed lists now, are actually legitimately popular. People are legitimately stupid and passive enough to continue to watch these uninspired people do the same damn thing over and over. (I can't completely exclude myself from that group, but I try.) This is the YouTube the masses demanded, and this is the YouTube we got.

I think the true glimmer of hope lies in channels that DO dare to reach for something more. Whenever I feel like the internet is a pit of the worst of humanity, I personally go watch the vlog brothers. If a couple more partners, or just any vloggers, could accomplish what Hank and John have started, maybe the virus of intelligent communication and art for the art's sake will spread. VlogBrothers 2.0 has inspired a shockwave of really quality content from well-meaning people hosted on YouTube.

Corey, I like your idea. If the videos weren't so damned competitive, if popularity wasn't such an issue, if worth wasn't measured in viewcounts... pretty much the only way you'd see good stuff is if someone sent it to you!

I get the feeling more videos would go viral under that system...

I kept on having flashes of the book Jennifer Government during your video. How people attach their name to a product. You at one time was Ben Youtube. Now you have stripped away your name and have become a bum. I like it.

It is creepy to think that we all have watched you grow and evolve.

i've stumbled around in various boh3m3 locales on and off for a year or something and once again, it's good to watch you talk. for a while it wasn't so good. you got back the fire-heart and it's reassuring to see that happen.
keep on keepin' on.

I think it's just time to accept that YouTube has run its course as a source of interesting original content. Just like anything else it had a beginning, a golden age, and now an inevitable decline. Eventually, any business like YouTube is gonna look to reap the massive profits that it has the ability to gain.

What I wonder is...what would happen if YouTube didn't have a "Most Watched" or "Most Subscribed To" list? If they didn't have a visible view count on every video. People would stop automatically looking at videos with a million views as entertaining and videos with 100 views as trash. Videos could just be videos and their creaters could just be creaters. Simple things like that could effectively reduce the amount of politicking on the site and once again let a good video be a good video, regardless of how many hits it's getting.

Youtube is indeed doomed. With all of the ads, the money....it's not the same anymore. It was fun to watch until youtube started changing to make more money with the ads, and paying directors by the view. It's terrible...it's the next MTV.
MTV used to rock...now oh my god..it's terrible.
absolutely TERRIBLE.

I miss the days when trolling a person YouTube would cause pages of drama and utterly disrupt everything in the site.

But, trolling doesn't really have that great of an effect now with the way YouTube works today and how huge it has become.
