Hey-lo!
So here’s the grip: I’m putting ads on the site.
I hate ads. In fact, I think that advertising in general is right up there with the genocide, torture, and Michael Bay movies. If there were another way of swinging this, I’d be all for it.
This is, unfortunately, a necessary evil. As of right now, I’m running adsense units on the site and looking for new ways to swing things.
It’s my hope that with a bit of work, I can host videos without those annoying in-video ads on this site and earn enough money to keep the site running without taking cash out of my pocket. I’m not looking to get rich off the site or turn blogging into my full time job. I think that puts too much strain and priority on advertising and makes the whole mess more annoying to everyone involved.
I AM looking into a service that allows bidding on adspace, instead of the usual google-generated stupidity that nets me five pieces of lint and a slap in the mouth.
I also plan on having some merch put together, in the form of stickers, T-shirts, and maybe some DVDs of my videos for people to buy if they want. I realize that’s a bit arrogant, so I’m not going to have more than a few items that are related to me. Instead, they will focus on my abilities as a designer and graphics dude and include inside jokes and graphics from this blog and videos. Of course, there might be the few basic “text on a shirt” kind of bits. Hard to ignore them, since they are easy as hell to make.
But I’m going to put designs to a vote by YOU guys, so that stuff that isn’t good gets the axe and things that pass can get feedback for tweakage.
The ads will never be pop-ups, or annoying “You’ve won a free ipod nano/laptop” kinds if I have my way. Adsense will have to be the bit for now, but that may not last long.
So please give me your thoughts on this whole arrangement. I can’t say that comments telling me to keep the site ad-free will be taken seriously without a suggestion on how to make money to pay the server bills. Suggestions are completely welcome and kind of needed at the moment.

I have no problem with completely random ads.
Anybody who’s using the Internet so much to the point that
they read blogs, is used to ignoring ads. For the most part.
I don’t even see them anymore.
So if you can earn money through some clicks here and there, why not.
Also, I think inside jokes on a shirt stuff would be really neat.
Honestly…i’d fight thru a plethora of pop-ups to get to one blog! Fuck it you have to do what you have to do…it might piss off a few people…but fuck ‘em…I’m sure this is as much of an outlet for you as entertainment for the rest of us. And in the long run you’ll need to do whats right for you….fuck i should just copy paste this into the 20 something blog…its a very cliche example of me turning into my mother.

You should do what ever you need to…just…promise us you won’t allow any of that speaking bullshit.
Try to get Extenze and Trojan adds up. Perhaps some water-proof dildo stuff too.

I just decided YESTERDAY that I wanted a boh3m3 sticker. You are on the ball sir! Stickers are way awesome. Maybe those banners you made ages ago… the “touch my weenis” one? I know what I mean.
I can tune out ads very easily…. good thing or bad thing I don’t know. You know that I’m all for a dvd, tshirt sure and stickers definately! We need a cartoon version of you having a moment with the IllWillPress characters :)
I wanted to agree on the whole “dont do ads” thing, but youve been strapped for cash in the past, why not do it and save yourself a penny or 2? Hell if i had the choice id probably do it to. By all means Ben advertise away!
And about the merchendise, I think its a great idea! Id love to walk around with your B3 insingia on my chest!
Hey man do what you gotta do man, it would take a lot more then a few ads to keep me away from this site. The merch idea is fucking rad man because it is clear you have a talent for design, and a boh3m3 shirt would be really sweet. Hell, you could make a “Boh3m3: The 2006 collection.” DVD and it would sell.
The merch might be a good idea. The only thing is, you need to make some videos to keep interest. Come on, man. Sit down for 5 minutes in front of your camera and say something. You can even forego the jumpcuts and effects. Just… do something.
Oh, and don’t worry. As long as they’re not pop-ups and don’t fuck with the spacing on the site, no one cares about ads.

I’m in favour of you adding advertisements to this blog; as long as they cater to everybody’s interests. May I suggest checking out some of your favourite blogs and see what kind of sponsors would be compatible?

Ads….the root of all evil. (well ok, I’m exaggerating). When I first saw you were considering them I thought “nooo don’t fall down that path Ben! Don’t go to the dark side!” but after seeing your explanation, I support you 100% man. If ads can help you to blog another day, then go for it.
The merch is a sweet idea. Plus you’re really talented graphics wise, so I can’t wait to see what you come up with. For the DVDs, maybe you could do a “Best of Boh3h3″ covering all of your vids as well as yearly sagas. Oh you should do buttons too!! Maybe “Boh3h3 Fan”, “Vegemite”, one with your old trademark black hat, or just some snarky comments. That would defiantly go on my hoodie. :)

I’ve no problem with ads as long as they’re not too irritating. It would be good if you could have people or businesses advertising on your site that actually want to be there rather than just random shit defined by keywords or categories – ads that we might actually click on. But that might take a bit more work, perhaps worth thinking about when your site starts getting more traffic.
